How to Stay Safe on the Road When the Snowbirds Arrive

Anyone who has lived in Florida for an extended period of time will tell you that during the winter months, everything from roads to restaurants seems to be much more full. Why is this? It is because a group of people, known colloquially as snowbirds, arrive in Florida to spend the season here in an effort to avoid the cold of the north. With many more people on the roads, it is important to be aware of safety precautions and procedures that should be adhered to during this time.

The vast majority of snowbirds are older, retired people and therefore they tend to drive slower and much more cautiously. The best thing to do when having to drive around someone who is slower than the flow of traffic is to slow down as well. If it is safe, and only if it is clearly safe, switch lanes to pass them, but do not be reckless about this and many an accident are caused this way. This can be frustrating at times, but road rage will not help anyone and will also increase the risk of accident and injury.

During snowbird season, the normal safe driving tips apply even more due to the greater numbers of people on the road. This include drunk and distracted driving, both of which should always be avoided.

If you have been involved in an automobile accident and are seeking compensation for your injuries, we at the Franco Law Firm are here to help. For more information and to schedule a free consultation with us, please call (813) 872-0929.
