Signs of Elder Abuse in the Nursing Home

Nursing homes are meant to be places of generous care where the elderly are looked after on a daily basis. But sometimes, it’s not care that is administered, but abuse. This occurs more often than many want to believe and so it is important to know the warning signs. Elder abuse is defined as malicious or negligent acts performed by a caregiver towards an elderly person. Like any other kind of domestic abuse, the signs are apparent if one is aware and able to notice them.

Elder abuse manifests itself in a number of different ways, but some of the warning signs are the same across the board. Malnourishment, poor hygiene, untreated and severe bedsores or injuries, a lack of basic necessities, or frequently lost items may be signs that an elderly individual in a nursing home is being neglected or taken advantage of. Some behavioral signs may be symptoms of depression, anxiety, fear, unresponsiveness, or isolation. These are all assuming, of course, that there is no other medical or plausible explanation.

What should you do if you suspect a nursing home of elder abuse? The first thing to do is to contact the police and have any incidents or suspicions reported. Elder abuse is a crime and therefore it is important to involve the proper authorities. Secondly, you should consult with an attorney to determine what the options are for a personal injury lawsuit.

At the Franco Law Firm, we believe that every person should be treated with respect and should receive the proper financial compensation if they are not. To learn how we can help you win your personal injury case and to schedule a free consultation, please call us at (813) 872-0929.
