Uber Accident? Here’s What You Need to Know

Uber has changed the way we use transport, having taken the nation by storm since its inception 8 years ago. With the rise of both Uber and other similar services, the number of those involved in accidents in lift shares has also understandably risen. But what happens if you’re involved in an Uber related accident? Are you protected?

These types of accidents can often be very complicated due to the nature of the service. Unlike ordinary taxis, Uber drivers are not technically employed by the parent company and are instead seen as independent contractors. Uber claims to merely facilitate the relationship between the driver and customer. Drivers will of course have their own insurance policies, but these do not usually provide cover for commercial accidents. This is a worrying fact that many Uber-users are oblivious to.

What about Uber Insurance?

Luckily you’re not completely unprotected. The company does have up to $1 million liability insurance in place, and additionally requires all drivers to have their own personal insurance too. It’s worth noting that Uber insurance is only in effect when the driver is operating the car. When it comes to pedestrians hurt by an Uber driver, you should also be completely covered by the company’s insurance.

If you’re unfortunate enough to be in an accident, it can be quite tough to reach Uber in order to get assistance. The best way seems to be to email them, however this is why it’s integral to have an experienced attorney who can help ensure you get what you need as soon as possible. As with all car accidents, it’s important to ensure you take photographic evidence, note the time of the incident, and if possible write down as much as you can remember. You can then give your legal representation as full a picture as possible and they’re in the best position to defend you.  If Uber insists you sign something, it’s integral to get your attorney to look through it first.

If you’ve been involved in an accident, Uber or otherwise, you should find a law firm to represent you as soon as possible. Franco Firm has experience in this area and can help in getting you the best result possible.
