What Questions Will They Ask At My Social Security Hearing?

The process of applying for benefits from the Social Security program can be a tedious and daunting one. When appealing to have your application accepted or to have a rejection overturned, you will be asked to appear at a hearing and answer questions to the Social Security Administration agent. What kinds of questions will be asked of you and how can you best prepare to answer them?

Typically, the point of the SSA hearing will be to gather more information from you regarding your life’s circumstances and reason for seeking Disability benefits. This will usually begin with personal information and background. Age, date of birth, height, weight, and other standard questions are included as part of the formalities.

After that, the agent will ask questions about your employment background. This includes where you have worked in the past, what kind of tasks were expected of you, pay rates, and related data. Finally, the questions about medical status and history, including any possible mental health issues, will come. This is important to answer properly, as you will likely be asked to describe your disability and how it inhibits your day to day activities and ability to find and hold a job.

The best way to prepare to answer these and related questions at a Social Security hearing is to have as much as the above information written down and documented. This will help you stay organized and provide any necessary citations. It is also a good idea to bring a lawyer onto your team who is proficient in Social Security law.
