Best Evidence to Have after an Auto Accident

If you have ever been in an automobile accident, no doubt one of the first things that people advise that you do is to gather as much evidence as possible. Why is this a good idea? If you are injured in said accident, and remember that some injuries do not manifest themselves right away, having evidence will help you attain victory in a personal injury lawsuit that you will probably want to file to help gain compensation for your injuries. Which kinds of evidence are the best to gather?

The most useful pieces of evidence after an auto accident are photographs. Photos provide an exact representation of how things were at the time that they were taken and this is often irrefutable evidence in a court of law. The best photos to have are ones to the various damaged parts of the vehicle, but it is also a good idea to take photos of any immediately obvious injuries, such as cuts or bruises. Using your phone to take these photos is typically recommended, as this will also provide time stamps of when they were taken, but any device that can also provide a time stamp is fine.

Another very useful piece of evidence is a police report. One of the first things that it is recommended that you do after an accident is to call the local police and have them arrive on site to fill out an official report. Such a report speaks volumes in a courtroom and therefore will greatly help you prove the fault of the other driver. It is also a good idea to gather witness statements of other drivers or pedestrians who may have seen the accident happen as well, although these are sometimes harder to obtain.

Again, having as much evidence as possible is always best, even if it doesn’t seem necessary or useful at the time. Even with that, it is always best to have an attorney on your side during a personal injury case as well to help use this evidence to attain victory in your case and see justice won for you.
