Buckle Up: Setting an Example for your Kids to Drive Safe

Teenagers do not instinctively know how to drive; they must be taught to be good and safe drivers. While many young people go through a driver’s education course in school, the people who they look up to the most for driving is their parents and guardians. Learning the essentials of driving from a book is one thing, but observing someone else drive, particularly someone who they ride often with, speaks so many more volumes. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance for you as a driver to set an example for your kids so that they can learn to be safe drivers as well.

One of the most important lessons and instances of leading by example as a parent driver is to always use a seatbelt. Many young people are averse to using a seatbelt and one of the most commonly cited reasons for this is because they don’t deem it necessary. Why don’t many young people feel that wearing a seatbelt is important? It is usually because they see that their parents and other drivers they ride with don’t wear them and therefore think, “why should I?” Young people tend to pick up on hypocrisy, so if you say to wear a seatbelt, but don’t wear one yourself, they will notice.

In the state of Florida, it is a legal requirement to wear a seatbelt as well. This creates another teaching opportunity for you as a parent driver. By teaching your kids that safety laws are put into place for a reason, and explaining the rationale behind them, you are sending the message that following these protocols is the safe thing to do and they will be more likely to do so.

Wearing a seatbelt is an easy way for you as a driver to set an example for your kids to drive safe and hopefully avoid car accidents in the future. That being said, accidents do happen sometimes and when they do, we at the Franco Law Firm are here to help you through the process of filing a personal injury case against the at-fault driver.
