How to Avoid Injuries from an Aggressive Driver

You’re doing everything right on the road. You don’t speed, drive while distracted, or drive while intoxicated, so you generally consider yourself a safe driver. However, what do you do if an aggressive driver singles you out on the road, or worse, you get in the car with an aggressive driver? It can be a scary situation, but there are steps you may be able to take to avoid injuries from an aggressive driver.

The most important thing to do when encountering an aggressive driver is to avoid and distance yourself from them. If they feel like they cannot get a reaction from you, they may leave you alone. Sometimes aggressive driving comes with alcohol and drug use, so you never know why someone is driving irrationally. If at all possible, never get into a vehicle with someone you feel is an aggressive driver. When someone else is behind the wheel, you really have no control as a passenger. If you realize you ended up in a car with an aggressive driver, try to exit the vehicle as soon as possible. Perhaps you can ask the driver to drop you off at a coffee shop or store and get out to call someone else to drive you. If you are unable to get out of the vehicle, make sure to make a mental note about their aggressive driving and do not ride with them again.

If you experience an aggressive driver in another car while you are driving it is extremely important to distance yourself and stay calm. This driver may beep at you, cut you off, and even shout things out of the window, but the best response is no response. If the aggressive driver is in front of you, make sure to put enough stopping distance between your car and the drivers car. You never know if the drive might stop short causing you to rear-end them.
