Preparing Your Teen For Their First Time Driving Alone

Learning how to drive is one of many challenges teenagers face as they grow older. Thankfully, you as a parent can make this time easier and, more importantly, safer for them by preparing them correctly and fully. If your teen feels comfortable driving, he or she will be much less likely to be involved in an accident both now and throughout their driving lives.

Normally, those that are looking to acquire a driver’s license must first hold a learner’s permit and drive with an adult for a year before being legally able to drive on their own. This creates the perfect opportunity to teach your teen what the rules of the road and best practices are. Explain what you are doing when driving and why. Advice from your own perspective will give them insight into what they should be doing when it’s their turn to be behind the wheel.

Remember that it’s not just about what you say that matters when preparing your teens to drive; what you do is just as, if not more important. If you tell your teen to drive safely, but instead drive recklessly yourself, they will pick up on the hypocrisy. More importantly, they will learn that it’s okay to be unsafe because they saw you do it successfully. Practice what you preach and do so consistently. It is a good idea as well to drive in a variety of places and circumstances, such as different weather conditions, so that they learn how to handle those conditions themselves.

Even if you prepare your teen as best as possible, accidents can and do still happen sometimes to both you and them. If you or your family has been injured as a result of an automobile accident, we at the Franco Law Firm are here to help you win the restitution you deserve and have you back to full speed in no time.
