Tampa Bay Area Worker Killed in Workplace Shooting

Work Comp

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a sanitation worker who was recently shot and killed while on the job in the Tampa Bay Area. This tragedy marks yet another workplace shooting in Florida, and this is proving to be an ongoing problem for employees across the Sunshine State. Whether you’re recovering from gunshot wounds or mourning the loss of a loved one, you might want to speak with a workers’ comp lawyer in Tampa after an incident like this.

Police Say Shooter Knew the Victim

On July 22nd, 2026, ABC 7 reported that a 47-year-old sanitation worker in St. Petersburg had lost her life after a shooting in St. Petersburg. Police say the technician was sitting inside her work vehicle when the assailant approached and shot her. Officials also state that the victim knew the shooter, and that this appeared to have been a “targeted attack.”

The victim leaves behind four children, and she had spent 12 years working for the city. After the shooting, the assailant attempted to flee before becoming cornered by police officers on I-75. After a PIT maneuver disabled his car, the individual barricaded himself inside before ultimately surrendering to the police. First responders then hospitalized him with severe injuries.

Can You File a Workers’ Compensation Claim in Florida After a Workplace Shooting if You Knew the Shooter?

A recent Supreme Court decision in Florida tackled this very subject. The case involved a worker who was shot by an assailant in a parking lot while carrying out his workplace duties. The insurer denied his claim, alleging that the motive for the shooting involved unpaid personal debt and was therefore completely unrelated to work. However, the Supreme Court ultimately concluded that this claim was still compensable, noting that the assailant fled the scene and no one ever confirmed the actual motive for the shooting.

In this type of situation, the motive behind the shooting becomes an important factor. If police apprehend the shooter and question them, they are more likely to determine the motive beyond a reasonable doubt. Although the criminal investigation is separate from your workers’ compensation claim, evidence gathered by officers in a police investigation could affect your ability to recover compensation. If the motive clearly points to a domestic issue outside of work, your claim may not be compensable.

That being said, each workplace shooting is slightly different. To approach your claim in a confident, accurate manner, consider discussing the specific circumstances of your injuries with an experienced lawyer.

Can a Tampa Workers’ Compensation Lawyer Help Me?

A Tampa workers’ compensation lawyer may be able to help after a workplace shooting. In theory, workplace shootings should lead to compensation via the workers’ comp program. In reality, however, these types of claims have a higher chance of being denied by insurers. Contact The Franco Law Firm to assess your situation with accuracy and confidence.
