Tips for Safe Driving on the Interstate

Driving on an interstate or major highway has somewhat of a dangerous stigma attached to it. Many people consider it to be more dangerous than driving on other roads and there is some evidence to support this belief. That is why practicing safe driving techniques is even more important on an interstate than on other main roads. Following these tips will hopefully help you avoid accidents and get to your destination safely.

One of the pitfalls of driving on the interstate that causes accidents is how smaller vehicles handle driving near semi-trucks. Many drivers are intimidated by driving next to such large vehicles, but many more drive unsafely near them. Never cut off a semi because if you need to stop sort, they will stop short more slowly and risk rear-ending you. Additionally, some truck drivers may be tired (despite regulations requiring them to rest) and therefore may drive in a more volatile manner. Keep a safe distance from semi-trucks, if possible, on all sides to avoid being in their blind spots.

Interstates allow for greater speeds while driving, so an extra layer of caution is certainly recommended. Due to the high speeds, it can open be more difficult to stop short, so being aware of the distance between you and the driver in front you is advised. Motorcycles in particular are important to watch out for, as they accelerate faster and can be harder to spot.

Interstates can sometimes be dangerous, but being in an accident on one doesn’t mean that you have to recover alone. If you or someone you know has been injured in an automobile accident, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
